There is clearly a need – and an opportunity – for more IT security in the UAE and the rest of the MENA. In a poll conducted at the GITEX tech gathering in Dubai, 64% of respondents said that they could not be confident of the security of data on the PDA’s if they were lost or stolen. The poll of IT professionals revealed that 58% believed that viruses posed the most serious threat to their, followed by hacking and then social media. The hacking result is surprising given that hacking still presents only a tiny fraction of actual problems, despite several high profile attacks in recent months. Social media, in real terms, is much more of a threat. A major part of the problem is that there is a low rate of data encryption in the Middle East, representing a very real threat of data theft.
